Did you know that there are pros and cons to the type of WordPress you use? During my first Digital Revolution class at Roger Williams University, I learned about what WordPress is and which one is more beneficial to use. So, what exactly is WordPress? WordPress is a content management system used to create and host your own websites. There are two types of WordPress: WordPress.com and WordPress.org. With WordPress.com there is a limited amount of theme support, meaning that you can’t customize existing themes or upload your own themes. There are also no plugins allowed and a limited amount of monetization in WordPress.com. So far I’ve only pointed out some negative features of WordPress.com. Are there any positives? Yes, basically the one positive feature of WordPress.com is that it is free. Whoohoo! Now, moving on to WordPress.org. Unlike WordPress.com, this site provides full theme support, allows all plugins to be used and even has monetization freedom. However, all of this freedom comes with a price… literally. It is estimated that users spend $46 – $100 per year for the monthly hosting and yearly domain registration fees. Depending on how serious you are about starting up your own site, I’d definitely suggest using WordPress.org because of its many benefits and extensive features.
